Negative Man! Crazy Jane! While Superman comics have been around for over 80 years, just how old is the Man of Steel himself within the DC universe? The answer is… it depends. Determining the age of Superman is especially challenging given how many different versions of the character have existed over the years.
Depending on the storyline, Superman may be just starting his career as a hero Superman for All Seasons or be returning after years of retirement Kingdom Come. In any case, most storylines generally depict Superman as either young, old, or in his prime while never explicitly stating his age. However, piecing together context clues across various comics can bring us closer to an exact number. Since Superboy 90 shows Lois and Clark to have been in high school at the same time, the Big Blue Boy Scout would logically also have to be somewhere in his 20s, likely a little older than Lois.
That works for the old-school Action Comics, but what about more recent series? Today, they work with Swamp Thing to protect the Earth's environment.
Even older than that is the Monitor. The Monitor predates the existence of the planet Earth, and perhaps the main DC universe. His backstory has evolved some since his creation, but essentially, he was created by Perpetua, a being of extreme cosmic power who built the DC Multiverse. The Monitor was one of the very first inhabitants of this new realm, which likely puts his age beyond any real conception.
The Monitor acts as a guardian of the positive-matter realm of the Multiverse, and would eventually run afoul of his negative-inverse, the Anti-Monitor , who nearly destroyed all existence. The Presence remains one of DC's most enduring mysteries. Though the entity has been in existence in the comics since the 40s, very little substance has been assigned to it. That might be because The Presence is basically God. As such, it's somewhat hard to apply a specific number to them.
Safe to say they are millions and billions of years old. Their physiology makes them immortal thanks to their proximity to the Source, an elemental energy in the Fourth World. Similarly, the Endless exist out of time and space and are as infinite and ancient as existence itself.
Some readers might think them a separate continuity than the DC Multiverse, but Sandman and its associated titles actually reside within main DC continuity. Some notable DC characters like Superman are even shown attending Dream's funeral toward the end of the acclaimed series. Some of the members of the Endless, like Death, likely span the entire existence of, well, existence, from beginning to end.
His short fiction appears in Strange Horizons, Interzone, Shimmer, and other venues.
