As well as some movies, HFR video is starting to creep into different walks of life: gaming, streamed video and even self-made videos using compatible cameras and phones. HFR stands for high frame rate. It is generally attached to content and screen technology that can refresh faster than 24 frames per second.
Why 24fps? It was chosen as the standard for big screen movie releases because it is the minimum frame rate that can produce decent sound quality. It was also chosen because it didn't use up too much film, so costs could be kept down. UK television has generally been broadcast at 24fps for many years.
Frames per second FPS refers to the number of discrete images displayed by a device every second. The human brain can interpret between one and five individual images separately, any more and they're perceived as motion.
As the number of frames per second increases, the motion becomes smoother and motion blur is eradicated. Oct 10, , pm EDT. Consumer Tech. Gemini Man Paramount. Paramount Pictures. Will HFR take over as the new face of cinema? Benny Har-Even. High Frame Rate technology is also present in the world of video games. Currently, there is very little HFR content out there, but that could change quickly. For example, James Cameron said he intended to use the HFR for the Avatar sequels, which could well start a technological revolution, just like the first episode did for 3D technology.
In addition, Netflix has tested the implementation of High Frame Rate content over the past few years. Likewise, it is possible to find videos on YouTube with high frame rates.
While few movie theaters are currently equipped with the necessary equipment to display HFR content, some TV manufacturers are already starting to integrate HFR into their TV specifications. Many 4K TVs have refresh rates of 60 Hz or even Hz, and can then play content at 60 fps and fps respectively.
At the moment, we are only at the beginnings of this technology. And, while video games can already be played on gaming PCs at fps or more, TV and movie content is unlikely to reach that level for quite some time.
For now, HFR footage is most commonly created by, and viewed on, our smartphones. When it announced its latest streaming box , Apple made a note of its new compatibility with HFR. Apple made a big deal about putting Dolby Vision on its iPhone 12 , so it makes sense that the Apple TV 4K can now show that footage on the biggest screen in your home. We hope this will also encourage broadcasters and streaming companies to experiment more with creating and distributing HFR content.
