In the late 90s, Warner Brothers gave viewers a trio of sisters who fought evil together through a TV show called Charmed.
The Halliwell sisters charmed their audiences for eight seasons and kept them coming back for more magic.
The show was so popular during its run due to its pro-feminist agenda, and fans loved watching three women find their place in the world. Although everything was all magical on-screen , things were ugly behind the scenes. From onset feuds between the characters to cast exits, Charmed had its fair share of drama. One of the most prominent issues that the cast faced was the constant frustration they encountered from the network.
Why don't we take a look back to how Charmed started all the way back in ? Lori Rom was the first actress cast as soon-to-be-fan-favorite Phoebe Halliwell, but she quit after filming the unaired pilot. Milano definitely fits the role much better than Rom did. Just check out the YouTube video comparing their different takes on the character to see why it's for the best that Milano took on the role. Very evident. But that's why their dynamic worked so much better than it did with Phoebe's original actress.
What's wonderful about the pilot episode, and which I forgot about, was how much Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Milano imbued their characters with a sense of sisterhood.
It was the perfect mix of sibling rivalry and genuine caring. This is why it doesn't surprise me that Doherty and Combs are still good friends to this day.
I get why Charmed gets compared a lot to Buffy. WB ordered Charmed after witnessing the critical and cult success of the better-written Buffy take shape a year into the series. But these two shows only have a superficial resemblance. Charmed far more resembles Xena: Warrior Princess, with its mix of drama, wacky humor, intensely layered mythology, and feminism-lite vibe. A couple of different rumors are floating around about what those personal reasons were, but there's nothing concrete.
Rom, who went on to land small roles in television's Providence and the film Resident Evil: Degeneration, also has never really explained why she left. What is known is that it was definitely her decision to step away from Phoebe and Charmed. Charmed producer Aaron Spelling then faced the task of recasting Phoebe. He turned to Alyssa Milano, a proven entity who had previously been on the sitcom Who's the Boss?
After Charmed landed a deal at the WB, a longer version of the pilot was shot for broadcast with Milano. That's the one that captured the attention of viewers and helped secure Charmed a permanent place on the network's schedule. Milano was perfect as Charmed 's stylish , free-spirited Phoebe. She brought with her a street-smart delivery and a casual attitude that added dimensions to the character.
