ESXi and vCenter Server configuration files control the behavior of the system. Most configuration file settings are set during installation, but can be modified after installation.
Log files capture messages generated by the kernel and different subsystems and services. Server and System Logs lists log files or reports, their locations and associated configuration files.
See Virtual Machine Log Files. In addition to viewing log files in real time you can also generate reports and complete diagnostic bundles. See Generating Diagnostic Bundles. Each request to the server is logged. You can view the file using the vSphere Client. Each running virtual machine has its own log file, vmware. By default, the log file is rotated whenever the virtual machine is powered on, but file rotation is configurable. When the limit is reached, the oldest file is deleted.

If a persistent scratch location on the host is not configured properly, you might experience intermittent issues due to lack of space for temporary files, and the log files will not be updated.
This can be problematic in low-memory hosts, but is not typically a critical issue for ESXi operation. If the installation device is considered local during deployment, the ESXi host does not usually need to be manually configured with a scratch partition.

The local ESXi logs can be accessed and inspected in one of several ways directly on each host:. The following table provides a comprehensive list of ESXi 6. Many different log files are generated automatically by different ESXi components and services.
